Vote drive starts in Pacoima

Daily News

PACOIMA -- The Pacoima Voter Registration and Education Project was kicked off Saturday with the help of nearly 50 local volunteers who are trying to get at least 1,500 new voters registered before the Nov. 6 general election, organizers said.

The project is part of the national nonpartisan Southwest Voter Registration Education Project that is mobilizing 150 groups across the Southwest in an effort to increase overall voter registration. With the help of the 150 localized groups, the national organization is seeking to register nearly 1 million new voters.

Local and state officials spoke Saturday to the community volunteers outside the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center in Pacoima to encourage their efforts to mobilize the community, said project volunteer Jose Luis Ramirez.

"Su Voto Es Su Voz" -- Your Vote is Your Voice -- is the motto of the organization that is primarily, but not exclusively, geared toward mobilizing the Latino community, Ramirez said.

"We want people to take that first step today, to give citizens of the area that voice," Ramirez said. "Then that voice will only get stronger when you get to vote in November."

Ramirez said anyone who is interested in volunteering for the project, or wants information about registering to vote, can call the Pacoima Voter Registration and Education Project at (818) 837-2272.
