SACRAMENTO, Aug. 24 (UPI) Legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain California drivers' licenses has been shelved for this year. Assemblyman Gilbert Cedillo (say-DEEL-yoh), D-Los Angeles, says it will remain in the Senate Transportation Committee until he takes it up next year. The measure passed the Assembly but senators balked at approving it in its present form. Cedillo says denying licenses to undocumented immigrants puts other people at risk since many of them drive anyway without training, testing.
